After college, he worked as a graduate assistant in Ohio from 2003 to 2004. Campbell declined an interview with the Patriots’ player personnel director. Mount Union won the Division III championship both years Campbell was offensive coordinator.

After that, he was Bowling Green’s offensive line coach and run game coordinator for two years. Campbell was Toledo’s run game coordinator in 2009.

2010 saw Campbell become Toledo’s offensive coordinator. When Beckman left for Illinois, Toledo named him head coach. After two weeks of work, Toledo won the Military Bowl. In four seasons at Toledo, he went 35-15.

The 2015 team peaked at No. 20 after beating Arkansas. After college, he worked as a graduate assistant in Ohio from 2003 to 2004. The Patriots’ head of player personnel invited Campbell to interview, but he declined.

Mount Union won the Division III championship both years. Campbell was the offensive coordinator. After that, he was Bowling Green’s offensive line coach and run game coordinator for two years. Campbell was Toledo’s run game coordinator in 2009.

Campbell replaced Paul Rhoads as Iowa State’s coach on November 29, 2015. He signed a $22.5 million, six-year contract on November 27, 2017. Campbell was Big 12 Coach of the Year twice.

Iowa State went 8-5 in Campbell’s second season, including wins over No. 3 Oklahoma and 4 TCU. In his third year at Iowa State, he led the Cyclones to another 8-5 season and 6-3 Big 12 record.

Campbell led the Cyclones to their best season in decades in 2020. First regular-season win in 119 years for the Cyclones.

ISU extended Campbell’s contract through 2028 on February 8, 2021. The Lions reportedly offered Campbell an eight-year, $68.5 million contract for 2021.
