In college, he started playing football. He and his brother Tim played for Boston College from 1994 to 1997. After college, the Packers drafted him in the sixth round of the 1998 NFL Draft.

He was a backup quarterback for the team in 1999 and 2000. Similar to Mike Holmgren and the Seattle Seahawks on March 2, 2001. He was traded for first- and third-round picks.

In Seattle, he competed with Trent Dilfer. After a strong 2002, he started 2003 undisputedly. He started all 16 games, helping Seattle reach the Wild Card for the first time since 1988.
