According to Blick, a Swiss German-language daily and online news site, Maxim Slobodian died on Saturday evening after being injured in a BASE jump mishap. The catastrophe happened after he continued with the leap at the Sputnik launch site, also known as Crack Reminder. According to Blick’s account, the disaster occurred at 7 p.m., after he committed to the leap.
Maxim Slobodian apparently crashed while flying in the “Tieregg” region in his wingsuit after hitting natural impediments, which are believed to be trees or high-altitude terrain. The bulk of his injuries was sustained when the 31-year-old plummeted around 300 meters. While Blick’s first account did not include his parachute, other local sources have said that a malfunctioning chute was the cause of his death.
Rega, a private non-profit air-rescue service, tried to save Slobodian on the spot. Their on-site doctor, however, allegedly declared the BASE jumper dead on the spot.
