Maxwell Frost Became The First Gen-Z Member Of Congress

Maxwell Frost

Maxwell Frost, an American activist, just won his bid for Congress in Florida, becoming the first Gen-Z member of the House of Representatives. In a speech to his followers, the politician stated:

“Florida Central” My name is Maxwell Alejandro Frost, and I will be the first member of Generation Z to serve in the United States Congress!”

Frost discussed his struggle against gun violence, saying that he began his quest at the age of 15 after the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in 2012. He also said that people want “big championships” and that every person in Central Florida deserves a “bold transformative shift.”

He stated:

“People are looking for brave champions who believe in the big transformative change that we need, that every single individual in Central Florida, throughout the state, and across the country deserves just for being human.”

Maxwell Frost, 25, beat veteran Army Green Beret Calvin Wimbish, 72, in the battle for the 10th Congressional District seat in Orlando. According to NBC News, the young democrat was heavily favored, leading Wimbish 58.8% to 39.7% with 72% of the votes cast. Frost recently fulfilled the Constitution’s 25-year-old age threshold for the chamber as a Gen-Z member (those born between the late 1990s and early 2010s). He is expected to stand out among his colleagues in Congress, considering the average age of House members is 58.

While the minimum age to serve in the United States Senate is 30, all House Members must be at least 25 years old. According to reports, the 2022 election cycle was the first in which Gen Z candidates reached the minimum age criteria to run for the House.

Maxwell Frost is a politician, activist, and community organizer from the United States. On January 17, 1997, he was born to a Haitian father and a Puerto Rican lady of Lebanese origin. Frost’s grandmother Yeya and mother landed in Florida from Cuba during the Freedom Flights in the early 1960s, according to his official bio. His biological mother had seven children and allegedly became embroiled in a drug, crime, and violence cycle throughout her pregnancy.

Frost was eventually adopted as a baby by special education teacher Maritza Argibay Frostas. He attended the Osceola County School for the Arts in Orlando and will begin classes at Valencia College in June 2022. The lawmaker apparently observed the impact of gun violence in his town and was subjected to police mistreatment at a young age. Following the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, he became an outspoken opponent of gun violence.

Frost also volunteered with the Newtown Action Alliance, a group formed in the aftermath of the tragedy, and worked on Barack Obama’s 2012 presidential campaign. In addition, the politician started working for Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton, and Margaret Good, and she became the national organizing director for March for Our Lives, a student-led organization advocating for gun control legislation.

Maxwell Frost also battled for abortion rights at the ACLU and headed the group during Florida’s successful Amendment 4 campaign. Over 1.6 million Floridians with prior felony convictions had their voting rights restored by the amendment. Frost won a 10-way Democratic primary in August for the nomination to fill the vacancy left by retired Rep. Val Demings. He eventually won the 2022 election as the Democratic candidate and is currently the first member of Congress from Generation Z.
