Meaning Of As It Was

As It Was is a mix of the sad and the beautiful, of sorrow and bliss, of personal struggles and of life celebration. Harry sings about a difficult time in his past in the upbeat song.

A heartwarming child’s voice can be heard at the beginning of the song saying, “Come on, Harry, we want to say goodnight to you.”

Ruby Winston, Harry’s 5-year-old goddaughter and the daughter of Late Late Show executive producer Ben Winston, has been identified.

Many fans believe that the lyrics “In this world, it’s just us / You know it’s not the same as it was” allude to Harry’s feelings about his celebrity life and relationship with his celebrity.

“Answer the phone / ‘Harry, you’re no good alone / Why are you sitting at home on the floor?” the lyrics continue. “What kind of medication are you taking?”

That section alludes to a time when people were worried about Harry, as it refers to a period of self-isolation. As It Was also contains a subtle nod to Harry’s partner Olivia Wilde, with lyrics such as “two kids” and “Leave America.” Olivia and her ex-husband, Jason Sudeikis, have two children.
