Michael Henry was born on November 7, 1965, in Pontiac, Michigan, to artist parents, and grew up in Virginia. His parents divorced when he was six years old, and he was raised solely by his mother. Life was difficult for him, and he attended a nearby Collegiate School on a scholarship. He later attended Washington and Lee University, where he earned a B.A. in history in 1988.

He was interested in comedy, but he didn’t think he could make a career out of it, so he passed it up. He began his career in advertising before moving to California to pursue an acting career. He began performing stand-up comedy after taking classes at the Grounding Theatre. He got his big break in 1998 when he was contacted to be a part of the new show Family Guy after working with his brother on writing, producing, and co-producing a short comedy for Burly Bear Network. He accepted the offer and began working on the project as a writer and voice actor. He was credited as a guest star for the first four seasons of the show, but as of the fifth season, he was credited as the main cast member.

The Cleveland Show, a Fox television show, premiered in September 2009. Henry created the show and co-executive produced it with Rich Appel and Seth MacFarlane. Cleveland Brown, the main character on Family Guy, was the focus of the show.

The show had 22 episodes in its first season and was picked up by Fox for the second season of 13 episodes. The show was canceled in May 2013 after the fourth season. It had 88 episodes in total. He has also provided voices for Robot Chicken, American Dad, and The Orville on television.
