As a youth, Vitti performed in amateur shows before studying acting at Rome’s National Academy of Dramatic Arts (where she graduated in 1953) and Pittman’s College, where she portrayed an adolescent in a charity performance of Dario Niccodemi’s La nemica. She toured Germany with an Italian acting team before making her theatrical debut in Rome in a performance of Niccol Machiavelli’s La Mandragola.

  • Vitti made his film debut as an uncredited extra in Edoardo Anton’s Laugh! Laugh! Laugh! (1954). She appeared in Adriana Lecouvreur (1955), L’alfiere (1956), and the TV movies Questi ragazzi (1956) and Il tunnel (1956). Monica appeared in an episode of Mont-Oriol (1958) and dubbed the voice of Rossana Rory in Big Deal on Madonna Street (1958).
  • Monica joined Michelangelo Antonioni’s Teatro Nuovo di Milano in 1957 and was cast as Dorian Gray in the director’s Il Grido (The Cry, 1957). She starred as a distant and cold heroine wandering into a romance with the boyfriend of her missing girlfriend in Antonioni’s globally acclaimed film L’Avventura (1960).
  • Modesty Blaise (1966), a mod James Bond espionage parody in which she appeared in July 1965, was Vitti’s debut English-language film. It had mixed success and got severe critical reviews, co-starring Terence Stamp and Dirk Bogarde and directed by Joseph Losey.
  • An Almost Perfect Affair, directed by Michael Ritchie and co-starring Keith Carradine, was Vitti’s second English-language picture and was set at the Cannes Film Festival.
  • Vitti experimented with writing and directing in 1989, resulting in Scandalo Segreto (1990), in which she also played with Elliott Gould. The film was a flop, and she eventually left the industry. Vitti received the Festival Tribute award at the Créteil International Women’s Film Festival in France in 1993.

Vitti subsequently revealed in an interview that Antonioni stopped their relationship.

Vitti married Roberto Russo in 2000, after being in a relationship with him since 1973.   She last appeared in public in 2002, at the Paris premiere of the theatrical musical Notre-Dame de Paris.  Alzheimer’s condition has “taken her from the public spotlight for the previous 15 years,” it was revealed in 2011.  Her husband verified in 2018 that she was still living at home with him in Rome and that he cared for her personally with the help of a carer.
