Nancy Ann Travis was born on September 21, 1961, under the sign of Virgo in New York City, New York. Travis is of American descent and of White ancestry. Her Catholic parents, Theresa Travis (a social worker) and Gordon Travis raised her in Boston, Massachusetts (a sales executive).

Travis attended Circle in the Square Theatre School after graduating from Framingham High School in 1979. After graduating from high school, she appeared in the play It’s Difficult to Be a Jew at the American Jewish Theater in New York City. She also attended New York University.
