Wickramasinghe studied music with Vincent Somapala and Ananda Jayasinghe. In 1959, she sang her debut song for Radio Ceylon’s ‘Amateur Voice’ program. She was chosen as an A-grade artiste in 1973 based on the songs sung by the SLBC’s research division. She earned a Sangeeth Visharada Degree in 1974 after studying North Indian Classical Music. Wickramasinghe had a string of successful singles, including duets with T. M. Jayaratne. Wickramasinghe afterward decided to become a music instructor. She opted to retire early in 1998 after 23 years of teaching in several schools, including an eight-year spell at Visakha Vidyalaya in Colombo. Wickramasinghe was diagnosed with severe abdominal cancer and survived.

Wickramasinghe established “The Mother,” a charitable organization, in 2002 with the goal of catering to children, the elderly, and artists who have made a lifelong commitment to the area. She was the organization’s president. In 1989, Wickramasinghe took part in the UNICEF Project to rescue children by eliminating polio in her nation. She sang a song written just for this promotion, which was widely broadcast on radio and television. Through this campaign, her actions greatly aided in the eradication of polio, and by 2000, not a single incidence of polio had been documented.
