After graduating from St. John Bosco High School, he was chosen by the Milwaukee Brewers to take part in their 1991 draft. He declined the invitation, however, and enrolled at the Georgia Institute of Technology instead. In 1994, Nomar signed up with the Sarota Red Sox as a Class A Advanced player to begin his professional career. Nomar joined the Boston Red Sox in 1996 and played a key role in their victory over Oakland. He committed to the Red Sox for a five-year deal worth $23.25 million in 1988. He was unable to play in the opening game in 2001 due to a wrist injury. He had healed by the 2002 season and was still playing for the team. Following the expiration of the contract in 2004, he signed a one-year deal worth $8.25 million with the Chicago Cubs.

In 2006, Nomar joined the Whittier-based Los Angeles Dodgers, a team from his hometown. A one-year deal for $6 million-plus $2.5 million in performance bonuses was signed by him.
