Montero was in a relationship with Aracely Arámbula from about 2000 to 2003. In 2006, there were rumors of a romance with his Duelo de Pasiones co-star, Ludwika Paleta, who was married to Mexican actor Plutarco Haza. Montero and Paleta denied the rumors until a video of them kissing was made public. This is said to have led to Ludwika Paleta’s divorce from her husband. Paleta and Plutarco Haza reconciled later. On August 31, 2007, two days after Montero announced the nominees for the 2007 Latin Grammy Awards, Miami Police reported that they pulled over Montero and a passenger after their white BMW SUV ran a red light. During the investigation, police discovered a clear bag that tested positive for cocaine and was claimed by Montero.

However, the following month in court, Montero pleaded not guilty to cocaine possession, was found guilty, and sentenced to probation pending completion of a court-mandated drug program.
