Marion Gordon “Pat” Robertson was born on March 22, 1930, in Lexington, Virginia, to Gladys Churchill and Absalom Willis Robertson. Willis, his older brother, gave him the nickname “Pat.”

In 1946, he graduated from Chattanooga’s The McCallie School. He then earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Washington and Lee University. He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity there.
