Paul Reubens was born Paul Rubenfeld in Peekskill, New York, on August 27, 1952. Judy Reubens, his mother, was an elementary school teacher, and Milton Reubens, his father, was a civilian pilot for the US Air Force and the Royal Air Force. They moved to Sarasota, Florida, and started a lamp business.

The 71-year-old attended Sarasota High School in Florida. He went on to Boston University and the California Institute of the Arts after that.

Reubens’ younger brother Luke Rubenfeld works as a dog trainer, while his younger sister Abby Rubenfeld works as an attorney. She is also the legal director of Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, a national gay and lesbian civil-rights group.
