Princess Mako is a former member of the Japanese royal family and the first child and eldest daughter of Prince Fumihito and Princess Kiko. She is Emperor Naruhito’s niece and the oldest granddaughter of Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Emerita Michiko. On October 26, 2021, she married lawyer Kei Komuro. She handed up to her imperial title and left the imperial family as a consequence of her marriage, as required by the Imperial Household Law.

She was born on October 23, 1991, at the Imperial Household Agency Hospital at Tokyo Imperial Palace, Chiyoda, Tokyo. Princess Kako is her younger sister, and Prince Hisahito is her younger brother. She attended the Gakushin School for Primary, Girls’ Junior, and Senior High School. In July and August of 2010, she studied English at University College Dublin (UCD). Then met with Ireland’s President, Mary McAleese, informally, and she traveled to Northern Ireland. Komuro received a bachelor’s degree in Art and Cultural Heritage from the International Christian University in Mitaka, Tokyo, on March 26, 2014.
