Ruthann and Lawrence “Larry” Dolezal welcomed Rachel Ann Dolezal into the world on November 12, 1977, in Lincoln County, Montana. Her Caucasian parents are white, of German, Czech, and Swedish descent. Her brother Joshua Dolezal wrote a book about their life in Montana; her parents were married in 1974. Her brother teaches English as a full professor at a central college in Iowa.
Dolezal asserts that she was reared in a tepee and that her family went on bow and arrow hunts for food, but her mother has called these assertions false. When Dolezal was still a teenager, her parents adopted three African-American children and one black child from Haiti. Three years before their daughter’s birth, in 1974, her mother allegedly shared a tepee with Dolezal’s father for a brief period.
Between 2002 to 2006, her parents and the adopted children served as missionaries in South Africa. Dolezal claimed to have grown up in South Africa, but her parents refuted this. Her upbringing was Pentecostal. She did, however, allege that her parents routinely mistreated her. She completed the Christian Liberty Academy class program while homeschooled, earning a 4.0 Grade Point Average.
