Ralph Allan Lee Shortey (born February 16, 1982) is a former politician and businessman in the United States. He was elected to the Oklahoma Senate as a Republican in 2010, defeating several challengers in primary elections. He was re-elected in 2014 and served until 2017. During his campaigns, Shortey advocated for “family values” and was known for his commanding physique. During his time in office, he founded a Republican consulting firm.

Duane Chapman and his wife, Beth, supported Shortey’s legislation to regulate the bounty-hunting industry (“Dog the Bounty Hunter”). According to the Associated Press, Shortey “routinely voted with his Republican colleagues on bills targeting gay and transgender people,” including a 2017 bill that allowed business owners to discriminate against LGBT people. Shortey was elected to the Senate for the first time in 2010. During his campaigns, he was a strong supporter of family values. There was an open seat in Senate District 44. (incumbent Senator Debbe Leftwich, embroiled in a misconduct probe, decided not to run for reelection). Shortey finished second in a four-candidate field in the initial Republican primary in July 2010, with just under 38 percent of the vote. She won the Republican primary runoff the following month, defeating James Davenport, a martial arts studio co-owner and former chief of staff, to a county commissioner; Shortey received 58 percent of the vote to Davenport’s 42 percent. In the general election in November, she defeated Democratic nominee Randy Rose, a retired Oklahoma City firefighter. Shortey received 57% of the vote, while Rose received 43%.

She was re-elected in 2014, defeating his Democratic opponent, attorney Michael Brooks-Jimenez. Shortey received 52% of the vote, while Brooks-Jimenez received 42%. Following Shortey’s resignation, Brooks ran in a special election to fill the vacancy in 2017 and received 54 percent of the vote.

Shortey was publicly chastised in February 2017 for attempting to undo Oklahoma voters’ approval of loosened state drug laws in November 2016. Shortey introduced a bill in the Senate, arguing that voters had not considered the consequences of their vote, to increase the penalties for drug possession within 1,000 feet (300 m) of a church or a school, which Oklahoma voters had voted to classify as a misdemeanor rather than a felony.
