Riddick Lamont Bowe was born on August 10, 1967, as the twelfth of 13 children to his parents. He was taken to Dorothy Bowe in Brooklyn’s Brownsville neighborhood, where he grew up. Brownsville is known for being one of New York’s toughest slums, and he has experienced a number of personal tragedies in his youth. Brenda, one of his sisters, was killed in an attempted robbery in 1988 by a drug addict. Henry, another brother, died of AIDS.

Riddick Bowe began his amateur boxing career when he was 17 years old. He knocked out James Smith in 4 seconds in 1984. The following year, in 1985, he was crowned World Champion in light heavyweight in the finals of a competition held in Bucharest.

Riddick Bowe began his professional career in 1985 when he competed in the New York Golden Gloves Champions and won the competition until 1988. He won a silver medal in the Super Heavyweight division at the Summer Olympics in Seoul in 1988. In 1989, he made his debut with a KO over newcomer Lionel Butler.
