Robinson José Canó is a professional baseball second baseman for the New York Mets of Major League Baseball (MLB). Canó has represented the Dominican Republic at the international level. In the 2013 World Baseball Classic, he won a gold medal and the Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) (WBC). Canó is one of only four players to win both a World Series and a World Baseball Classic, along with WBC teammates Octavio Dotel and Santiago Casilla.

Robinson Cano Biography

Cano’s father, José Cano, signed as an amateur free agency with the New York Yankees in 1980 and pitched in the minor leagues for the Yankees and Atlanta Braves before making his Major League debut in 1989 with the Houston Astros, pitching in six games. Jackie Robinson, a baseball legend, was the inspiration for Robinson’s name.

Canó was born and raised in the Dominican Republic’s San Pedro de Macoris, however, he did spend three years in New Jersey. For the seventh, eighth, and ninth years, he attended Newark schools, as well as Barringer High School for one year. After his family returned to the Dominican Republic, Canó attended San Pedro Apostol High School in San Pedro de Macoris, where he played baseball for the school.

After graduating from high school, Canó was signed as an amateur free agent by the Yankees on January 5, 2001, and received a signing bonus of about $100,000. In their minor league system, he made his debut with the Gulf Coast Yankees of the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League and the Staten Island Yankees of the Class-A Short Season New York–Penn League.

In 2002, Canó split his time between Staten Island and the Class-A South Atlantic League’s Greensboro Bats. When he played for the Tampa Yankees of the Class-A Advanced Florida State League and the Trenton Thunder of the Class-AA Eastern League in 2003, Canó was a promising prospect. In 2003, Canó took part in the All-Star Futures Game.

After hitting.330 in 108 at-bats with Columbus, Canó was promoted to the Major Leagues on May 3, 2005. At second base, he took over for Tony Womack. On May 5th, Canó hit his first professional base hit against Hideo Nomo of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Canó also struck his first professional grand slam during the season.

He finished second in the American League Rookie of the Year voting behind Huston Street of the Oakland Athletics.
