Ronda Jean Rousey was born in California in 1987 to parents Ron Rousey and AnnMaria De Mars. Ronda nearly died at birth, suffered a brain injury, and her vocal cords were damaged as a result of the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck. At the age of six, she was able to speak an understandable word.

Ronda Rousey was the youngest of three siblings and was raised by their mother because their father broke his back and decided to commit suicide when he realized he would be paraplegic and later quadriplegic when Ronda was eight years old.

Ronda struggled with education and had to drop out of high school, despite later earning a General Equivalency Diploma. Despite her dissatisfaction with education, she discovered a new hobby in Judo, which her mother encouraged her to pursue after she became a world judo champion in 1984.

Two years later, she would break the record by becoming the first female from the United States of America to win an A-Level tournament and the first female to win two junior world medals. In 2008, Ronda set another record by becoming the first American citizen to win an Olympic medal in the Judo category, and she retired from Judo that same year at the age of 21.

When she said goodbye to Judo, she pursued a career in Mixed Martial Arts, where she made her debut in 2010 by winning three amateur-level competitions. She has never lost a single fight since, and she frequently pins an opponent in the first round via armbar submission. She would go on to win the undisputed Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight title.
