Silverfield played for The Bolles School for four years, winning state championships in 1995 and 1998. Later, for the 1999 season, he joined the coaching staff as an assistant, effectively ending his playing career. Silverfield is one of the few FBS coaches who has never played college football.

Silverfield landed his first college coaching job during his freshman year at Hampden-Sydney College, and he chose to coach rather than play for the rest of his four years in college. He was an offensive assistant for one year, the tight ends coach his senior year, and the defensive line coach his sophomore and junior years.

For the 2004 season, he was the head coach at Memorial Day High School in Savannah, Georgia, where he led the team to a 1-9 record. After one year as the quarterbacks coach at Jacksonville University, he returned to the college coaching ranks as a graduate assistant at UCF for two years. Furthermore, prior to joining the Minnesota Vikings staff, where he worked in various capacities for six years.

After a one-year stint at Toledo, where he left mid-season to join the Detroit Lions staff as an offensive line coach, he accepted a position as an offensive analyst at Arizona State. After the 2015 season, he was hired as an assistant by Mike Norvell at Memphis. He was the offensive line coach for two years before being hired, and he was the run game coordinator in 2018.
