He joined the Third Way in 2014 as a Clean Energy Fellow, where he was in charge of exploring challenging subjects linked to advanced nuclear physics. Sam joined the Bipartisan Policy Center in 2015 as a Senior Policy Analyst, where he managed a big project for the Nuclear Waste Council.

He founded his consulting firm, Core Solutions Consulting, in 2017; however, he stopped it after just seven months. He subsequently joined The Trevor Project, serving as Head of Advocacy and Government Affairs for four years and as Vice President of Advocacy and Government Affairs until September 2021. Along with his work with The Trevor Project, he was also the Director of Global Political Strategy for Deep Isolation, with whom he is still in contact. He was appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary of Spent Fuel and Waste Disposal in February 2022.
