Sam Lafferty was born to parents Jill and Andy in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on March 6, 1995. His mother remarried Dave Weaver, who had coached Lafferty as a child when his parents subsequently got divorced. After Mario Lemieux returned to the Pittsburgh Penguins for the 2000–01 NHL season, he was motivated to start playing hockey. Lafferty and his younger brother Charlie participated in the Pittsburgh Area Hockey League for the Mid-State Mustangs and the Altoona Trackers after attending a skating session Dave conducted.
