Sergio was born in Chieti, Abruzzo, Italy on 17 June 1952. He was born to Concezio Marchionne and Maria Zuccon. His father was of Italian ancestry, and his mother was of Croatian ancestry. Although he was born in Italy, he immigrated to Toronto, Ontario, Canada with his parents. As a result, he holds dual nationality in Italy and Canada. His siblings are unknown. He is a Christian and is born under the sign of Gemini. He is of white caucasian ethnic origin.

Sergio was a well-educated individual academically. He graduated from St. Michael’s College School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of Toronto. Additionally, he earned a Bachelor of Commerce and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Windsor. Additionally, he earned a law degree from York University’s Osgoode Hall Law School in 1983. In 2013, he was also awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree by Walsh College.

The 66-year-old business magnate died in Zurich, Switzerland on July 25, 2018. Numerous reports indicated that the cause of death was undiagnosed cancer. Briefly, he underwent shoulder surgery prior to his death but was unable to avert death from invasive shoulder cancer.

He later worked as a Group Controller for Director Corporate Development at the Lawson Mardon Group and as an Executive Vice President at Glenex Industries.

Sergio remained with Acklands as vice president of finance and chief financial officer, the Lawson Group as vice president of legal and corporate development and the chief financial officer.

He began his successful career in 1997 as the CEO of Algroup in Zurich. Sergio later became the CEO and MD of Lonza Group Ltd. in Basel, where he also served as chairman. He even had the opportunity to become CEO and Managing Director of SGS S.A. of Geneva in 2002. Additionally, the career-defining moment occurred when he was elected as an independent member of the Fiat S.p.A. Board of Directors in 2003 and later appointed CEO in 2004.

Sergio Marchionne succeeded Robert Nardelli as Chrysler’s CEO in 2009, following Fiat Group’s acquisition of a 20% stake in Chrysler. Later that year, he oversaw the official merger of Chrysler and Fiat. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is one of the world’s top ten automobile manufacturers.
