Shawn Kemp was born in Elkhart, Indiana on November 26, 1969. Kemp was raised by his mother, Barbara, and began playing basketball at an early age. Kemp attended Concord High School before going on to become one of the best basketball players in the country. He was in his senior year of college at the time.

He received a scholarship while attending the University of Kentucky. However, due to poor grades, he was soon barred from continuing his studies at the university. Kemp attended Trinity Valley College in Athens for a short time before entering the 1989 NBA draft at the age of 19.

Kemp had seven children by the age of 28 from six different women. As a result, a significant portion of his income is spent on childcare. He owns ‘Oskar’s Kitchen,’ a sports bar in Seattle’s Lower Queen Anne neighborhood. However, the bar was closed in 2015.

Shawn Kemp was the youngest player ever drafted by the Seattle “SuperSonics” in 1989. By his second season with the Sonics, he was recognized as a rising NBA star. Kemp’s career with the Sonics reached its pinnacle in 1995 and 1996.

He and Gary Payton led the team to a franchise record of 64 wins and a trip to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1979. He was with the Sonics until 1997 when he was part of a three-team trade in which he was traded from the Sonics to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Despite his extreme weight issues, he led the Cavaliers to the NBA Playoffs in each of his three seasons with the team. He was traded to the well-known Portland Trail Blazers in the year 2000. His career began to decline as a result of his severe weight gain, as well as cocaine and alcohol abuse.
