He used to work in the restaurant with his brother when he was younger. But he did not pursue the family business. He was particularly fond of basketball and baseball, both of which he excelled.

In Oklahoma, he attended Northwest Classen High School. Later, he earned his bachelor’s degree in English and history from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. He began working as a sports columnist in college and was an editor of the student newspaper The Hustler while at university.
