Steve Morse was born in the United States on July 28, 1954, in Hamilton, Ohio. Steve’s family moved to Tennessee when he was a young boy, and later to Michigan, where he spent his childhood. Steve grew up with his older brother Dave, with whom he briefly collaborated in a band called the Plague.

Morse enrolled in the Richmond County Academy, where he met bassist Andy West, with whom he formed the Dixie Grit. He later enrolled at a local Catholic school, where he completed 11th grade, and he later enrolled at the University of Miami, School of Music. Morse once worked as a commercial airline pilot.
