Susan Berman was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1945, as the only child of Betty Ewald, a touring dancer who went by the stage name Gladys Evans, and David “Davie” Berman. Berman grew up in Las Vegas and subsequently in Hollywood, California, where she attended the Chadwick School and had classmates and friends including Jann Wenner and Liza Minnelli. Berman graduated with honors from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1967 when she met real estate heir Robert Durst. She earned a master of arts in journalism from the University of California, Berkeley in 1969.

Berman was a writer and memoirist, as well as the author of The Underground Guide to the College of Your Choice, a 1971 college handbook. Her debut book, Easy Street, chronicled her upbringing as the daughter of a gangster. The William Morris Agency represented her in the 1970s and spoke with numerous Hollywood filmmakers who were interested in turning the novel into a screenplay. The film rights were eventually acquired for $350,000, but no film project ever materialized. Berman tried to fund a musical based on the Dreyfus scandal for a while, but Durst refused to invest.

Berman worked in San Francisco for the San Francisco Examiner, Francis Ford Coppola’s City Magazine, the Westinghouse Evening Program on KPIX-TV, and the People show on CBS. She contributed to publications such as New York, Cosmopolitan, and Family Circle. She also authored Driver, Give a Soldier a Lift!, and Lady Las Vegas, which were released to coincide with the 1996 premiere of an A&E documentary for which she was a co-writer and was nominated for a Writers Guild of America award.
