Georges Vartanian (1912–1970), her father, was born in France to a Bulgarian mother called Slavka and an Armenian father. He served at the French embassy in Sofia as an attaché. Vartanian was abbreviated to Vartan by the family. Her mother, Ilona (née Mayer 1914–2007), was of Hungarian-Jewish heritage and the daughter of notable architect Rudolf Mayer.

  • Eddie gave Sylvie the opportunity to record the song “Panne d’essence” with French rocker Frankie Jordan in 1961. The EP by Decca Records was a surprising smash. Despite the fact that she was not recognized on the sleeve, “Panne d’essence” was Vartan’s first appearance on French television.
  • In the fall of 1962, she issued an EP and her debut LP, Sylvie, including her rendition of “The Loco-Motion.” Her second success was “Tous mes copains,” which was released on an EP in 1962. She also got her first adult role in a film when she played a singer in the film Un clair de lune à Maubeuge.
  • Sylvie had a hit album (“Toutes les femmes ont un secret”) in 1996, which included the song “Je n’aime encore que toi,” penned by Quebecer Luc Plamondon. She took another sabbatical from public performance when her brother Eddie died in 2001.

Vartan then married record producer Tony Scotti, and the couple adopted Darina, a young Bulgarian girl.
