Tameka was born in the Georgia town of College Park. Dianne Cottle gave birth to Cottle. Charles “Speedy” Pope was her father. Her father and uncle formed a band called The Tams. It was an R&B band. Joseph Pope was her uncle’s name. She herself became a member of the R&B group Xscape. It was a group of four.

She joined the group while attending Tri-Cities Performing Arts High School in 1991. A producer took notice of the group. Jermaine Dupri was his name.
