Tavis Smiley was born on September 13th, 1964, in Gulfport, Mississippi. Joyce Marie Roberts, his mother’s name, is a single mother who became pregnant at 18. However, his mother later married Emory Garnell Smiley, a US Commissioned officer.
Later, the family relocated to Indiana, his stepfather was transferred to Grissom Air Force Base in Peru, and his mother was a devout Christian. The family used to go to the News Bethel Tabernacle Church in town. Smiley and his two other siblings were not allowed to go to the movies as children, and they could only watch family-friendly shows on television.
Tavis became interested in politics at 13 after attending a US Senator Birch Bayh fundraiser. Tavis was an active member of the student council and the debate team during his school years.
Tavis then enrolled at Indiana University Bloomington but could not pay his tuition because his parents refused to fill out financial aid paperwork. After his first year, he attended summer classes and did some work. During his early years, he lived off campus with the Indiana Hoosiers men’s basketball team.
