Ted Koppel Biography

Koppel was born as an only child in Nelson, England. His parents were German Jews who had fled Germany in the aftermath of Adolf Hitler’s rise to power and the rise of Nazism. Koppel was born just a few months after his father was imprisoned in 1940.

To support her young son, his mother sold her personal belongings and worked menial jobs in London. After his release from internment, Koppel’s father was still not allowed to work in England, nor would he allow his wife to work.

After the war, the family was able to reclaim some of their confiscated assets and chose to immigrate to the United States. While in England, Ted Koppel attended Abbotsholme School in Derbyshire. When he was 13, his family moved to the United States, where his mother, Alice, became a singer and pianist and his father, Edwin, established a tire factory.

Koppel attended the McBurney School, a private preparatory school in New York, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree at the age of 20. Koppel then attended Stanford University, where he received a Master of Arts in political science and mass communication research. His future wife, Grace Anne Dorney, met him at Stanford.

Career

Ted Koppel was a teacher for a short time before working as a copyboy at The New York Times and as a writer at WMCA Radio in New York. He was hired as ABC Radio News’ youngest correspondent ever in June 1963, working on the daily Flair Reports program.

His and Charles Osgood’s coverage of the Kennedy assassination in 1963 drew national attention. He was supposed to deliver a brief report, but due to a hiccup during the crisis, he was forced to improvise for an hour and a half.

In 1964, he covered his first presidential nomination convention, the first of many. He began covering the civil rights movement in Selma, Alabama. ABC executives were impressed by Koppel’s ability to explain complex subjects in simple terms.

In 1966, he transitioned from radio to national television as the ABC News correspondent for the Vietnam War. He agreed to accept the position only after the network agreed to relocate his wife and two children to Hong Kong to be closer to him. He enrolled in a Vietnamese language course before leaving.

Koppel interviewed Nelson Mandela at a town hall meeting in 1990. Koppel rose to prominence as the host of Nightline, a late-night news program. The show began as a series of special reports on the 444-day-long Iranian hostage crisis. While hosting Nightline, Koppel hosted a series of special programs called Viewpoint, which featured media critique and commentary.

Some liberal groups claimed Koppel was a government mouthpiece, accusing him of favoring conservatives when selecting guests.
