After defeating Bobby Joe Young, Thomas Hearns competed in the 1977 National Amateur Athletic Union Light Middleweight Championship and won. He competed in and won the National Golden Gloves Lightweight Welterweight Championship the same year.

Thomas Hearns began boxing in 1977 under the tutelage of Emanuel Steward, who developed Hearns from a lightweight boxer into one of the sport’s most lethal punchers.
