Ravanel founded Ravanel Development Corporations, a commercial real estate firm. In 2004, he attempted to succeed Fritz Hollings. Hollings had stepped down as the United States Senator. After competing in the Republican primary election, Thomas was elected to position three. He then supported Jim DeMint, who won the general election. As a result of the endorsement, he was fined more than $19,000 by the Federal Election Commission.

Ravenel ran against incumbent state treasurer Grady Patterson in 2006. Patterson, a Democrat, had held the position for nine years. Thomas was elected State Treasurer of South Carolina following the 2006 general election.

Six years later, in 2012, he backed Ron Paul in the Republican primary. Ravanel is currently starring in the Bravo reality show Southern Charm. Thomas became an official candidate for the United States Senate on July 14, 2014, on a Monday morning. He was an independent candidate who would face off against the incumbent, Lindsey Graham, among others. Ravanel received 3.9 percent of the vote in that position.
