Career

Bailey attended North Carolina State University and was a significant member of Wolfpack’s 1983 N.C.A.A. Championship run. Under head coach Jim Valvano, he led the Wolfpack in scoring and rebounding that season. The Utah Jazz selected him seventh overall in the 1983 N.B.A. draft. Similarly, he was chosen by Jazz management for the strength of his character as well as the strength of his game. This began his 16-year professional basketball career, 12 of which were spent in the N.B.A.

Bailey started for most of his first two seasons with the Jazz, but coach Frank Layden made Bailey one of the first options off the bench after the Jazz drafted Karl Malone. Bailey’s two finest N.B.A. seasons occurred in 1987–88 (19.6 points per game, 82 games played, ten starts) and 1988–89 (19.6 points per game, 82 games played, ten starts) (19.5 ppg, 82 rounds, three starts). His peers dubbed him “Big T.”

On November 25, 1991, he was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Tyrone Corbin and a 1992 second-round draft pick. Bailey holds the distinction of appearing in 84 regular-season games for both clubs in 1991–92. He spent nearly three seasons in Minnesota before departing for the Greek League (for Panionios) in 1994–95.
