Tom Netherton was born on January 11, 1947, in Munich, Germany as Thomas Harold Netherton Jr. Lillian (Christensen) Netherton was his mother, and Thomas, a United States Army officer, was his father. Because of his father’s military job, he was constantly moved as a child. Following his father’s retirement in 1961, they eventually relocated to Bloomington, Minnesota.

Netherton then went to Bloomington High School. During his junior year of high school, he and his buddies challenged each other to audition for the school musical. He participated in the AFS intercultural program to obtain a leadership position in the school’s international youth exchange organization, American Field Service (AFS) Club. During his summer vacation, he spent time in Peru. After returning to Bloomington for his final year, he was chosen as class president. He attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis to study architecture after graduating from high school in 1965.

Sheila Schafer met Lawrence Welk at a golf club in Bismarck after being impressed by his musical and entertaining ability. Welk urged him to audition live at the St. Paul Civic Center. Netherton later joined Welk’s musical family program, The Lawrence Welk program, as a regular. He was a regular on the program for over a decade.

Netherton made his television debut on The Lawrence Welk Show in a Christmas special episode on December 22, 1973, during the show’s 19th season. He was a regular on the program till it ended in 1982. He was one of the show’s most popular vocalists. Welk, the program’s presenter, thought Netherton, who declared himself a ‘born again Christian,’ fit the image he desired for his family-friendly show. He made 13 albums and traveled widely as a Christian music artist in addition to his television appearances.

Death

On January 7, 2018, Netherton died of pneumonia in Nashville, Tennessee. According to a Facebook post by his brother-in-law Bruce Koblish, Netherton had the flu, which progressed to pneumonia. According to Koblish, Netherton went to the doctor, but he had gotten too weak and couldn’t recover. He was 71 years old when he died.
