He was the son of Ruth, also known as Nee Remick, who worked as a home hawker. His father’s name was Major Thomas B Smothers, and he was an army officer who died in World War II in April 1945.
Dick Smothers, his younger brother, and Sherry Smothers were his other siblings. They eventually moved to California. Later, Tom enrolled at Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach. He used to act in plays and compose music in high school. He later completed high school.
