Tommy Thayer was born in Portland, Oregon, on November 7, 1960. He is the eldest child of James Thayer, a businessman and community leader, and Patricia Thayer, a violinist and singer. He has a younger sister and three younger brothers. Thomas essentially grew up in Beaverton, Oregon, where the family later relocated.

Thayer grew up around music because his mother was a talented violinist and singer. He grew up listening to The Beatles and various other 1960s pop music. However, Tommy loved complex rock music, and when he was 13 years old, he finally acquired an electric guitar. He graduated from Sunset High School in 1978. Tommy played in several local bands before starting his own after receiving his degree. His band had the name Black ‘n Blue.

Tommy Thayer started his band Black ‘n Blue in 1981 after graduating. In the bar, he served as the lead guitarist. Around 1983, the band began playing in southern California after playing all throughout Portland. The band saw great success, and within six months after signing an aa recording deal with Geffen Records—a highly well-known international record label—it scored its biggest hit.

Around 1984, the band collaborated with Scorpions producer Dieter Dierks to release some popular songs in Germany, including “Hold on to 18” and “School of Hard Knocks.” Along with them, they also had the album Black ‘n Blue released. Other collections they have included Without Love and Nasty Nasty. Sadly, the band split up in 1988 for an unknown reason.

Later, Gene Simmons, the bassist for Kiss, and Paul Stanley hired Thayer, who then joined the band, Kiss. Thayer participated in the 1995 Worldwide Kiss convention tour as a manager. Most of Kiss’ videos were also produced and edited by Thayer. Ace Frehley and Peter Criss, who play guitar and drums, respectively, received assistance from Thayer in relearning their original 1970s parts. Since then, Thayer has played lead guitar with the Kiss, beginning with a private concert in Trelawny in 2002.
