Tyron Lakent Woodley was born on April 7, 1982, in Ferguson, Missouri, United States. He is the eleventh child of Sylvester and Deborah Woodley’s thirteen children. He was raised by his mother after his father abandoned the family when he was young. Deborah Woodley is his mother’s name, and Sylvester Woodley is his father’s. In high school, he was a two-sport athlete, competing in American football and amateur wrestling. He also won the Missouri 4A Men’s State Championship in the 160lb weight class in 2000.

He attended the University of Missouri’s wrestling program after graduating from McCluer High School in 2000. He was a two-time All-American in the program, first in 2003 and then again in 2005. Later, in 2005, he graduated from university with a major in Agricultural Economics.

Career

Tyron fought his first professional fight against Steve Schnider on February 7, 2009, at the Holiday Inn Select Executive Center in Columbia, Missouri, hosted by Headhunter Productions. In the first round, Woodley won by submission. On April 30, 2009, he fought his second professional fight against Jeff Carstens. In the first round, he defeated Jeff by submission. Tyron made his Strikeforce debut against Sal Woods on June 6, 2009, at Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields in his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri. In the first round, he won by submission. Tyron was signed to a six-fight contract by Strikeforce following his victory.

Then, at Strikeforce Challengers: Kennedy vs. Cummings car, he fought his second Strikeforce fight against Zach Light. In the second round, Woodley won by submission.
