Valerie June Bowman was born on June 14, 1956, in Shiraz, Iran, to James E Bowman and Barbara T Bowman. In 1956, her father, a pathologist, and geneticist ran a children’s hospital in Shiraz. Her family was forced to relocate to London when she was five years old, and her parents are of European and American descent.

Jarrett primarily spoke Persian, French, and English as a child. Her mother was one of four advocates who founded the Erikson Institute in 1966 to provide collective knowledge in child development to teachers and other professionals who work with young children.

Jarrett graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon High School in 1974 and earned a B.A. in psychology from Stanford University in 1978. As if that wasn’t enough, she pursued a Juris Doctorate at the University of Michigan Law School. Jarrett began her career in Chicago politics in 1987 as deputy corporation counsel for finance and development for Mayor Harold Washington.

In the 1990s, she remained in the mayor’s office, serving as deputy chief of staff to Mayor Richard Daley. She hired Michelle Robinson in 1991 and later married Barack Obama. Jarrett was the Department of Planning and Development commissioner from 1991 to 1995. She also served as chairwoman of the Chicago Transit Board from 1995 to 2005. Valerie was Habitat Company’s CEO and a Chicago Stock Exchange member (2000-2007, as chairperson 2004-2007).

Valerie also served on the board of trustees of the University of Chicago Medical Center from 1996 to 2009, rising to vice chairwoman in 2002 and chairwoman in 2006. She was one of the Obama administration’s longest-serving advisors and confidantes. In addition to serving as a senior advisor to the President of the United States, Jarrett held other leadership positions. She completed additional duties such as chairing the White House Council on Women and Girls. At the same time, she co-chaired the White House task force on sexual assault prevention for students.
