Valerie Jarrett Biography
Valerie June Bowman was born on June 14, 1956, in Shiraz, Iran, to James E Bowman and Barbara T Bowman. In 1956, her father, a pathologist, and geneticist ran a children’s hospital in Shiraz. Her family was forced to relocate to London when she was five years old, and her parents are of European and American descent.
Jarrett primarily spoke Persian, French, and English as a child. Her mother was one of four advocates who founded the Erikson Institute in 1966 to provide collective knowledge in child development to teachers and other professionals who work with young children.
Jarrett graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon High School in 1974 and earned a B.A. in psychology from Stanford University in 1978. As if that wasn’t enough, she pursued a Juris Doctorate at the University of Michigan Law School. Valerie also served on the board of trustees of the University of Chicago Medical Center from 1996 to 2009, rising to vice chairwoman in 2002 and chairwoman in 2006.
