Gilbert Gottfried, an American actor, and comedian, died this week. The 67-year-old was best known for voicing a number of famous animated characters, including Aladdin’s parrot Iago and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Kraang Subprime. He also had his own popular movie podcast, Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcast, and appeared in Beverly Hills Cop II, Problem Child, and Dr Dolittle, in addition to stand-up comedy.

In a statement on Twitter, his family said, “We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Gilbert Gottfried after a long illness.”

“Aside from being the most recognizable voice in comedy, Gilbert was a wonderful husband, brother, friend, and father to his two young children.” Although today is a sad day for all of us, please continue to laugh as loudly as you can in Gilbert’s honor,” they added.

According to the actor’s publicist, he died of myotonic dystrophy type 2, an inherited disease that affects the muscles and other body systems.

Dara Gottfried, formerly Dara Kravitz, is Gilbert’s wife. The 52-year-old has worked as a producer and appeared in several shows alongside her husband.

According to IMDb, she appeared with him on the TV show Celebrity Wife Swap in 2013 and helped produce Gilbert Gottfried: Dirty Jokes in 2005. Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcast, on which he discussed all things film with celebrity guests, was also produced by her.

According to The New York Times, the couple met at a Grammys party in 1997 and dated for a decade before marrying.

They married in February 2007, and have two children together. Their first child, Lily Aster Gottfried, was born shortly after their marriage in June 2007. In May 2009, they welcomed their son Max Aaron Gottfried.

Aside from the off-the-cuff social media post, the couple kept their marriage relatively private. We do know, however, that they lived in South Florida.
