When asked why she decided to join the cast of Survivor season 43, 24-year-old competitor Jeanine Zheng said that she had two important reasons for doing so.

According to Parade accounts, she stated:

“I’ve come to see you for two reasons. So, first and foremost, I’m here to perform for my father. His American dream has come to fruition. Survivor has always been his favorite reality American television program. As a Chinese immigrant, he could never have envisioned himself on the program. But the fact that I am currently on the program as his daughter and the first generation is remarkable.”

She went on to discuss more the subject:

“[The second is] just for me. I feel like I’ve spent my whole life trying to live up to this image of a flawless person who isn’t actually me… Survivor was the first time I realized, “Oh, I’m selected for who I am and for things that aren’t so robotic and so high-achieving.” I’m really delighted to be able to come out here and play and show to my eight-year-old self that I, as a socially sophisticated, creative, and humorous person, am capable of winning.”

When asked what motivated her to enter the tournament, Zheng stated:

“To be honest, I believe my whole life has prepared me for this game. I have a lot of outdoor expertise from guiding Harvard hiking excursions. On a daily basis, I also feel genuinely interested in and like hearing people’s tales. So I guess that’s something I simply do every day… But I believe that a series of tiny events have built up to this point, and I am well equipped to play this game.”
